About McTimoney Chiropractic at Evergreen Wellness

What is Chiropractic, and How Does it Work?

Chiropractic treatment is a straight forward method of adjusting the body to help relieve pain and discomfort, and increase mobility.

Reduced mobility and discomfort can occur for many reasons; some of the most common are incorrect lifting, car or sporting accidents, falls, stress, and prolonged habituated posture.

Depending on your condition, the chiropractor may make chiropractic adjustments to your body, use massage techniques, ultrasound or a range of other techniques they are qualified in and give you advice on exercise, self help, diet and lifestyle.

All our chiropractors graduated from The McTimoney College of Chiropractic and are often sought after due to the gentle whole body nature of McTimoney technique. Many of our chiropractors are however, also trained in other chiropractic and massage/soft tissue techniques and will discuss and advise what they feel would be the best course of action for you.

Is Chiropractic treatment just about back pain? Can you help with anything else?

Although many people seek chiropractic treatment for back pain, Chiropractors treat the whole body and when attending our clinic no matter what you walk in with, we will always assess and treat your body as a whole and not just focus on the area of pain.

Chiropractic care can help a range of conditions including:
- Back, neck and shoulder pain
- Pain, discomfort and stiffness in joints
- Migraine
- Muscular aches
- Sports injuries
- Arthritic pain

What happens when I visit a Chiropractor for the first time?

Your first visit can last up to 75 minutes.
Firstly the Chiropractor will sit down with you and take a full medical history, and give you the opportunity to ask questions and explain the condition you are currently suffering with.
You will be asked to undress to your underwear, or you may wish to wear shorts and t-shirt. We also provide gowns if you prefer.

During the examination, the Chiropractor will carry out neurological and orthopaedic tests, if necessary and check for signs of any serious conditions for which you would need to go to your GP or to hospital.

Will the treatment hurt?

Chiropractic treatment is usually painless unless an area is inflamed (swollen). If this is the case your Chiropractor will alter the treatment as much as they can whilst still being effective. They might advice ice, pain relief, or use ultrasound on an inflamed area but may not be able to do much until the inflammation has started to subside. Some patients have mild reactions such as temporary aches and pains initially after treatment, usually lasting no longer than 48 hours.

It is important that you talk to your Chiropractor if you feel worried about anything either during or after treatment.

Your Chiropractor will give you an after care leaflet and explain it to you at your first appointment.

What do I need to know before my treatment starts?

Treatment is very much a partnership between you and your chiropractor.
Before your treatment starts, your chiropractor will explain to you clearly:
- What they found in the examination
- The treatment plan they propose
- The benefits and any significant risks associated with your condition and proposed treatment.

To help you feel more at ease during a consultation, you or your Chiropractor may want another person to be there. These arrangements should be made before your appointment, so please let your Chiropractor know in good time.

How many visits will I need?

This will depend on:
- Your condition
- How severe it is
- How long you have had the condition
- How you respond to treatment

After your first examination and diagnosis, how long any further visits last will depend on
your condition and the treatment you need. The chiropractor will review your progress regularly
and you will be asked to give your consent to any changes to your treatment plan. They will discuss
carrying out further investigations or referring you to your GP if your condition does not improve.

Chiropractic treatment is incredibly effective but it is not a ‘quick fix’ and although some people only require 1-2 treatments, the average number of treatments is 4-6. Patient compliance with exercise, postural advice and lifestyle changes is also an important factor in the treatment plan.

Not sure if Chiropractic is right for you? Come for a free assessment

If you are not sure whether Chiropractic is right for you or can help your condition we offer FREE 30 minute consultations known as a Structural Assessment, in which we carry out a basic examination and discuss our findings with you. Based on what we find, we can advise on whether Chiropractic treatment is suitable for your condition and and give you more details about treatment options.
